Hydraulic jacks are essential tools for building prestressed concrete buildings. Prestressed concrete is a technique for increasing the strength and durability of concrete by adding internal stresses before subjecting it to external loads.
Hydraulic jacks in prestressed concrete construction provide the necessary energy to tension steel tendons or cables implanted in the concrete. These tendons are often composed of high-strength steel wires or strands. Tensioning the tendons compresses the concrete, helping to mitigate the tensile pressures that will be exerted on the structure during its service life.
Hydraulic jacks are used to gently and precisely impart tensioning force to the tendons once the concrete has been cast and cured sufficiently. The jacks are attached to the ends of the tendons and actuated to pull them in opposite directions, stretching them and exerting a compressive force on the concrete.
Once the desired tension is obtained, the tendons are securely secured to the concrete with specialized anchoring mechanisms. The stretched tendons create compression force, which serves to offset the tensile stresses generated when the structure is loaded, decreasing cracking and enhancing the overall strength and performance of the concrete element.
